The app developed by DNAWORKS, an arts and service organization dedicated to fostering dialogue and healing through the arts, in collaboration with Digital Ant Media, presents a valuable educational tool. Operating since 2006 and engaging with various institutions across thirty-seven states and seventeen countries, DNAWORKS has established a commendable track record in the realm of arts and community engagement.
Designed to heighten awareness surrounding the tragic 1921 murder of Fred Rouse, a Black man who fell victim to a lynching by a White mob in Fort Worth, TX, the app guides users through five historically significant locations in the area. Since December 2020, DNAWORKS has also facilitated live, socially distanced tours at four of these sites. Each location featured in the app offers a wealth of resources, including historical research, photographs, newspaper articles, artistic responses to this racially charged crime, and augmented reality elements that enrich user interaction with this somber history.
In an effort to enhance the tour experience, DNAWORKS has partnered with Fort Worth Bike Sharing, which provides complimentary bike rentals for participants, as well as with the Tarrant County Coalition for Peace and Justice. Together, they are working towards installing historical markers in honor of Fred Rouse, particularly as part of the centenary commemoration of his lynching in December 2021. The visual elements of the app are designed by artist Troy Lambert, while the background music is composed by Third Wind Productions artists Maritri Garrett and David Winder. Biographies of guest artists can be found in the app's credits section.
As a matter of sensitivity due to the content covered, it is recommended that users be at least 15 years of age.
The app incorporates a DONATION feature that connects users to DNAWORKS's fiscal sponsor, facilitating tax-deductible contributions aimed at supporting future anti-racist and racial equity initiatives. Notably, 10% of all donations will be allocated to the Rouse families. Donors are encouraged to specify their donations made through the app in the comment section.
To ensure accessibility, remote access to app content will be provided at no charge, reflecting our mission to unveil overlooked histories that foster community dialogue and healing.
